SCORE Madison

Serving SW Wisconsin

Who we are, what we provide

The purpose of SCORE is to provide experience based counseling and mentoring to small business owners and to people contemplating establishing a new business. This is accomplished through face-to-face counseling, email or phone sessions. We also provide “Going into Business” seminars on a regular basis and workshops on specific topics for business owners. The seminars and workshops have a small fee, while all other counseling is free. We help our clients write business plans prepare to meet with a banker, work through specific issues all based on a belief that experience does count.

SCORE is affiliated with and partially funded by the Small Business Administration, which is a part of the U. S. Department of Commerce. Locally, each SCORE Chapter is an all-volunteer organization. Originally SCORE members were retired businesspersons, but recently chapters have welcomed non-retired businesspersons as members. This is very beneficial in that the new members tend to have recent Hi-Tech experiences.

Madison SCORE Chapter 145 is one of 364 chapters nationwide. We have more than 40 members. Our offices are in the University Research Park at 505 Rosa Road on Madison's west side. Our office hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon five days a week. Members take turns staffing the office and do counseling during our business hours. Our geographic area includes 9 counties in southwest Wisconsin.

During office hours we schedule face-to-face meetings with clients in our conference room. These meetings are scheduled for one hour. We have two counselors attend each counseling session with the client(s). Follow-on meetings are usually scheduled at the joint convenience of the client and counselors and may also be at alternate locations.

The chapter has an executive committee over seeing chapter activities. Members are expected to become active participants in chapter standing committees.

General membership meetings are from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month. Members are expected to attend general meetings. These meetings are to discuss chapter business and have a non-SCORE speaker present a topic pertinent to our work. Additionally, the chapter has several committees publicizing our chapter for the purpose of obtaining new members and attracting new clients.

Currently our major challenges are attracting new, members, broadening our client base, educating our members to better serve clients, and providing a broader out-reach to those potential clients outside the greater Madison area.
